Springs Health Farm - Dec 2002

Our visit started on a wet December day. I'd bought my wife a "2 for the price of one" special. It's not exactly 2 for one, as the "free" guest does not get the 2 inclusive treatments of a facial and a full body massage.

It was really a "wet" weekend - we arrived wet from the rain, swam, doused, showered, applied lotions and got wet even when we left. But it was a heavenly sort of "wet" while we indulged in the pampering offered by Springs Health Farm.

Springs had upgraded us, due to a cock-up in sending the "surprise" treat to my wife, after I'd asked them to send the tickets to me and I complained. They also gave us two free Thalassotherapy treatments, which was an invigorating session in a huge Jacuzzi of high pressure mineral-rich water massaging your body.
The upgrade (from Standard to Superior room) gave us 6 complimentary bottles of water, and free robe hire.

The staff at Springs are excellent and we were made very welcome.
All guests get a guided tour of the facilities, although we passed on that as we'd just missed a tour and didn't want to hang around for an hour for the next one. So we explored for ourselves.
The overwhelming feel of the resort is one of relaxation - nobody moves too fast.
Most people hover around dressed just in the uniform of slipper and white robe.

There's no one-upmanship, or outdoing in the style contest, if everyone looks the same.
Even the celebrities that use Springs (as shown by the many signed photo's) don't stand out - everyone is on the same level. There was no air of snobbery or class distinction - just a friendly, calm atmosphere - everyone was there for unwinding.

Guests have free use of all the facilities (the only extra's are for treatments). Facilities include the technologically endowed Gym, the gardens, which are laid out with walks and pools (you get free use of bikes if you want), the cafe and lounge areas (where people actually spent some time asleep), the steam rooms and saunas, and a great pool and Jacuzzi, with the best changing facilities I've found. If you want to pay for extra's you can get Aromatherapy massages, beauty treatments, facials, manicures, pedicures,
mud wraps, and all sorts of holistic treatments.

Dining was an experience - the food was fabulous - not at all what I expected for a health farm - but good tasty, wholesome food. Lunch was superb with a pasta chef on duty to cook any pasta with your choice of ingredients. There's no bar, and Springs don't encourage the consumption of alcohol - it's goes against the healthy lifestyle. But you can have wine with your meals.

Springs is just one of the resorts in the Champney group, and is located near Ashby, in rural Liecestershire. For us it was an expensive treat, but well worth trying. We found it affordable using the 2 for 1 offer, and paid around £280 for 2 of us for 2 nights. £560 would have put it out of our reach.

Overall it was a wonderful experience, but unlike many people we spoke to who go regularly, we'll probably savour that one visit for quite some time.
